How resilient are you?

How well do you bounce back after a difficult situation or trauma?

What is resilience?

Resilience is your ability to adapt well and recover quickly after stress, adversity, trauma or tragedy. If you have a resilient disposition, you are better able to maintain poise and a healthy level of physical and psychological wellness in the face of life’s challenges. If you’re less resilient, you’re more likely to dwell on problems, feel overwhelmed, use unhealthy coping tactics to handle stress, and develop anxiety and depression.

You can develop resilience by training your mind so that you are more positive about your perceptions. You use purposeful, trained attention to decrease the negative thoughts in your mind and bring greater focus on the most meaningful aspect of an experience.

This approach can enhance your quality of life, decrease your stress and anxiety and generally improve your well being.

So how can we improve and develop our resilience?

We need to boost our self-esteem and we can do this by identifying our strengths, valuing our accomplishments, ensuring our belief in our capacity to bounce back, and understanding how we can overcome the stresses which inevitably occur in our life.

Everyone is different but there are several areas where we derive our self-esteem. These include:

Positive Thinking

We need to understand what thought is and what does thought actually mean? We can then learn how to control our thoughts and determine our destiny.

Confidence and Self Esteem

Confidence is a really personal thing that isn’t the same for everyone. Even if you’re not naturally confident you can build on your confidence over time. Positive thinking, practice, training, knowledge and talking to other people are all useful ways to help improve or boost your confidence levels.

Self Image

Self image is all about how you see yourself. This may be how you see yourself physically or your opinion of who and what you are. It is the sum total of all the information you have gathered about yourself from your childhood right up until today. It is how you believe you are. It is the blueprint of you as an individual. It is the one that you show others, ‘this is the way I am because this is what I believe about myself.’

Weight Management and Lifestyle

Weight management and a healthy lifestyle play a huge part in our level of self esteem. We can learn how to control what we eat and drink without feeling deprived. By dealing with any emotional eating issues you can regain control of yourself and learn that boredom, frustration, stress and any other feeling is no reason to eat, enabling you to lose that weight and keep it off!
